The challenge
Counterfeit and grey-market products can closely resemble genuine stock, making field verification difficult when inspectors rely only on packaging, memory or disconnected reference files. Product appearance, barcode, market, brand and photographic evidence all need to be checked quickly and consistently.
For a regional FMCG operation, verification becomes more complex because authentic packaging can vary by country while counterfeit products may intentionally imitate locally approved goods. Field teams therefore need country-specific reference data rather than one global catalogue.
The project required a centralized verification system where authorized staff could maintain genuine product references, catalogue counterfeits, compare evidence visually and produce a clear report that could be shared during customs, distributor or market inspections.
